mythological creatures — [1/?]

The banshee, or bean-sidhe (woman of the fairy), is described as a spirit appointed to forewarn members of certain ancient Gaelic families of their time of death. Those families include the O’Gradys, the O’Neills, the Ó Longs (Longs), the McCnaimhíns (Nevins), the Ua Briain (O’Briens), the Ó Conchobhairs (O’Connors), and the Caomhánachs (Kavanaghs)—all since extended by intermarriage. She generally appears in one of three guises—maiden, matron, or crone. This is representative of the triple aspects of the Morrígna, the Celtic goddess of war and death (Badb, Macha, and Nemain).

Finnish mythology series: Louhi and the Daughters of the North

Louhi is the witch queen of the land called Pohjola (pohjoinen: Finnish word for ‘north’) in Finnish mythology. She’s a shapeshifter who has tremendous magical powers. Louhi is the main antagonist in the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Her kingdom Pohjola is described to be a cold and cruel place, and it’s believed to be the source of monsters, illnessess and other evil things.

Louhi’s children, the Daughters of the North, are despite of their heritage said to be incredibly beutiful. In folk tales many heroes come to propose them, but Louhi doesn’t give away her daughters very easily. She makes the heroes perform difficult tasks so they can prove themselves worthy for her daughters. She intentionally designs the tasks impossible to accomplish, and the suitors get killed instead.

greek mythology meme: deities
↳ Furies (Erinyes)

In Greek and Roman mythology, the Furies were female spirits of justice and vengeance. They were also called the Erinyes (angry ones). Known especially for pursuing people who had murdered family members, the Furies punished their victims by driving them mad. When not punishing wrongdoers on earth, they lived in the underworld and tortured the damned.

According to some stories, the Furies were sisters born from the blood of Uranus, the primeval god of the sky, when he was wounded by his son Cronus*. In other stories, they were the children of Nyx (night). In either case, their primeval origin set them apart from the other deities of the Greek and Roman pantheons.

Valkyrie

valkyrie (valkyrja ”chooser of the slain”) is a woman who has the power to choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Valkyries also appear as beautiful lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty. Many valkyrie names emphasize associations with battle and, in many cases, on the spear—a weapon heavily associated with the god Odin. They are originally viewed as “demons of the dead to whom warriors slain on the battlefield belonged”.

So whenever you think of women as fragile, delicate creatures, remember that a valkyrie is a fierce powerful warrior woman who could chose if you live or die in a battle. Don’t mess with her!!!
